There are nearly a dozen incidents where commercial airliners have been shot down by either ground-to-air missiles or gunfire that are listed on the Wikipedia List_of_airliner_shootdown_incidents. Some were carried out by terrorists or guerrillas (RH825, RH827, Polar 3, a 2003 Baghdad DHL cargo flight, and three Tupolev civilian airliners belonging to Transair Georgia in 1993) and others were accidents caused by mis-identification of the aircraft (KAL0009, IR655, LN 602, Siberia Airlines Flight 1812).
This could be a concern for airlines operating in areas such as Libya where Stinger missiles are missing and also Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other conflict areas. Passengers flying to these areas already know there is a risk. Wouldn't countermeasures tell the passengers that the airline is as concerned for their safety as it is for their fare?
