The Mayans,Egyptians, and many other ancient societies had rightly predicted polar shifts. The next major one will be in 2012,where the magnetic north and south poles will shift. This shift happens every 26,000 years and due in about 4 years. The earths crust will move in such a way that the poles will be moved to the equators.Global warming is just the first signs of the polar shift, and the actual shift could take years or abruptly in just weeks or days.Massive changes in sea levels, famine ,and dramatic changes will take place with at least half of all living things will die.It will not be the end of the earth but will have changed beyond our comprehension.

    • Far more likely for the shift to take hundreds or thousands of years. In fact, we are currently experiencing a very gradual weakening in the poles right now.

The 26,000 year shift you speak of is not the the magnetic poles, but rather the Earth's axis which precesses at that rate. The shifting of the magnetic poles is much more unpredictable (chaotic is a better word), and has tended to happen about every 250,000 years, with the most recent one occurring 780,000 years ago... so you can see there is a lot of variability in the rate.
