Christmas as we know it now has nothing to do with it's original origins. It was originally a feast to celebrate the Babylonian god Marduk. Where they would disguise the king and take a common beggar or a criminal and pretend he was king for a week. And then at the end he would be sacrificed to Marduk in place of the real king. This would take place around the end of December(of course they didn't use the same calender as us, so it didn't always coincide). This custom of celebration then made it's way around the region eventually to Egypt, where it was picked up by the Romans. In Rome it was used as a tribute to Saturn. When Rome became Christian, this did not stop the pagan holidays and celebrations. To cope with this, the Church changed their meaning. Christmas then became the celebration of the birth of Jesus. And that's the short version of where christmas came from.
