It would be possible to code a virus to do this (depending on your router) but I've not heard of one (and I work for an antivirus company). Furthermore, it would be fairly difficult and complex to code virus to be able to compromise most types of routers (impossible to compromise all routers). Code red in the past negatively affected routers but didn't alter their settings.

The virus would have to find the router's IP (easy as most of the time it would be your gateway), login using the username/password cached in your browser (or brut force crack it which isn't always possible for multiple reasons), and then using HTTP commands and a scraper or telnet commands alter whatever configuration it needs to alter...

Note: when technology is involved, most of the time, the most plausible explanation is what happened.

    • At least you admit it's 'possible'.
