Help answer this question below.
I'm also gay, and for the first time my boyfriend and I went to the gay bar downtown Toronto last week (I shouldn't call it a gay bar because it is so diverse, there are 50% straight people there, about 25% lesbians, 20% gay men, and 5% transsexuals)... we were just watching one of the shows together and within a couple hours we had 3 people come up to us (all straight) telling us how much they respected the bar we were at, how great we looked together, and how much fun the 'gay community' is... I find that in the past couple years homosexuality has been more widely accepted (at least in north america)... and it's great!!!
For anyone that does have a problem with it... well they will have to get used to it since it is becoming more widely accepted. Maybe some religions don't tollerate it, but it's not something that is 'acquired'... this has been proven. for example for all the straight people out there that think it's a choice let me ask you this: when did you CHOOSE to be straight? Welcome to the year 2006 people :)
OK, religiofascists how is this equality? How is this a special right?

Nicely put.
Apparently some people think they had something to do with the race, sex, situation, religion, or sexuality they were born into.
Must be nice to be such an efficient and influential fetus.

Most people who aren't solidly locked into Dark Ages thinking support your right to live a normal life and love whom you choose. But watch out for that bottom 1% of the gene pool...
by Stableboy on December 3rd, 2006
strangely no faggots and lesbians are born of faggot or lesbian relationships, so that makes everyone a product of ??? 1 man + 1 woman = you and everybody else was born of this same quotient!
by hollywood_media on December 20th, 2006
What does it matter what we're a product of?
by Darkling on December 22nd, 2006
I think we just heard from that bottom 1% of the gene pool. Great, so now we have a full spectrum of mindsets present! Let's sing "we are the world" together on 3...
by Stableboy on December 24th, 2006
hollywood_media: You're exactly right! I honestly can't believe no one has said this before! I was born from two right handed parents. I am left handed. I thought all my life that there was something wrong with me. I mean, just why would God have given me this left-handed lifestyle? What had I done wrong? I don't think I'll ever fit in, not really. I've even tried to make myself right handed. I can safely "pass", so that no one ever has to know my dark secret. But, each time I write in that unsure script that my right hand produces, I feel like I die a little inside. I feel sickened by this, but as long as I can keep hiding my shame from the rest of the right handed world, I at least feel a little safer that I never have to use those "special" scissors again! Thank you for putting in words what I've always known, deep down inside my sad, little, left handed heart. Thank you.
by teknimage on December 24th, 2006
You're a LEFTY!?? Eeewwwww... I can't believe I ever talked to you. I'm sorry, but I disagree severely with your "lifestyle". That's just ... gross. If God had meant people to be left-handed he would have put the steering wheel on the other side of the car. Ick!
by Stableboy on December 24th, 2006
There's nothing wrong with not fitting in, that means you're being an individual, but we should always examine if what we're doing is rational, or if we're just taking things to a higher level of social misfit pride. Myself included. I am a social misfit. however I am not gay.
by thefunkyone on December 28th, 2006
I doubt many have "chosen" to be gay simply to be disestablishmentarian. However, I think there are many outside the "mainstream" of popular culture who emphasize their separateness distinctions to help define themselves. This is evident in many subcultures, not just in the gay community. I also don't think of being gay as being a "social misfit". LOL
by teknimage on December 28th, 2006
Nevermind. Do you ever know what you want to say, but don't know how to say it?
by thefunkyone on December 28th, 2006
Of course! LOL I think I read that in my Owner's Manual. Something to do with a flaw that is easily exploited. I keep looking for the patch or upgrade, but can't seem to find it anywhere.

Must be talking about Woody's Bar on Church St. I'm not gay and have been there with a gay pal. Must mean I'm ok with it.
by scubabob on January 6th, 2007
I've been to Woody's. Been there more times than I am able to properly recall. :P Fun place. It was also the bar featured as "Babylon" on the Showtime series "Queer As Folk".
by teknimage on January 7th, 2007
So you're not offended when people confront you like that? Like, you don't feel weird or anything?
I have a lot of gay friends so I just wanted to know the etiquette.
by Fisherofman on January 7th, 2007
The etiquette is to treat your gay friends as your friends. What's the difference? A friend is a friend. I don't feel any different, when walking down the street when one of my woman friends says "nice ass" or if it's a friend that happens to be gay says it. Both are saying EXACTLY the same thing. Why should it matter the source?
by scubabob on January 7th, 2007
I SHOULDN'T matter, but in today's social structure sometimes it does.
For instance, Caucasians can't use the "n word".
Chill out.
by Fisherofman on January 7th, 2007
It* shouldn't matter (correction)
by Fisherofman on January 8th, 2007
We choose to be straight at birth, when we are born. You know, the part where you were born naturaly from a woman who had sex with a man to produce you? Go fuck yourself mate. I have no problem with homosexuality. But its the same as everything. If your different be prepared to cop flack from people. By coming out gay, you willingly open yourself to all critiscm, unfortunately people of other races dont have that option. Theres a difference between tolerating and welcoming homosexuality. I think people should just learn to accept the fact that it probably will never be welcomed, and youve got to get over it
by Anonymous on January 8th, 2007
Well Anonymous, you've certainly entered the conversation with a bang. I don't think you'll win the compassion OR the original thinking awards, but if you still want to do something useful I have an old tree that needs some angry person to chop it down.
by Stableboy on January 8th, 2007
Anonymous: Holy cow! That's totally SICK! What about birth makes you want to have sex with a woman? You've totally lost me here. I don't know if you're in therapy for this, or just exploring these feelings, but I suggest you take a closer look at how you "chose" to be straight. I mean, I've seen natural child birth and personally find nothing about it that would want to make me have intercourse with a woman. Is there something I'm missing? Could you elaborate?

Actually, homosexuality is a mixture of genetic and environmental factors. If it is FULLY acquired, then the twin studies would have shown that both twins would be homosexual. In a lot of the cases, one twin is homosexual and the other isn't. Contrary to popular belief, it is not entirely genetic.
by Anonymous on February 6th, 2007
I'm sorry anonymous but you're wrong... No one has the same DNA, therefore just because one twin is gay does not mean the other would be too. Obviously your straight or in denial about being homosexual. But thanks for your useless input.
by jd72087 on February 6th, 2007
Identical twins actually do have the same DNA. That's why twin studies are useful for determining certain things. One twin acts as the genetic control. I may not agree with Anonymous' views but there's no reason to be nasty about it.
by Darkling on February 6th, 2007
Just agreeing: Identical twins do have the same DNA, thus any difference in behavior or otherwise is attributed to environment.
by Jon Hart on March 29th, 2007
Yes. That is the amazement of twins. They share the same DNA.
by Mom of 4 on March 30th, 2007
I want to add to my above comment. Although they share the same DNA, does not mean they will BOTH be gay/lesbian etc. Just because one has a passion for carpentry doesn't mean the other will.
by Mom of 4 on March 30th, 2007
The fact that homosexuality is becoming more acceptable is not a good thing. Gun crime and pedophelia, are also on the increase but that doesn't make it right, infact it just shows you how disgusting this world has become and is becoming. No its not a good sign its a sign that we are living in the last days 2 Tim 3. I koow you all won't agree but truth is never popular with ones who hate truth.
by Charmaine Jay on April 1st, 2007
What does homosexuality have to do with gun crime and pedophilia? I don't understand. Why would homosexuality not be acceptable- live and let live!
And anonymous is too yellow to use a proper username.
by Engeltje on April 1st, 2007
DITTO CHARMAINE . . . I dont believe being gay is the way God intended. Just because its popular, doesnt make it right. I have nothing against the people themselves. Its the practice that is wrong. Logically, how could it be right . . . How many gays does it take to make a gay? Condemn the sin not the sinner. we all have faults that need attention. A true friend would never ridicule those with problems, but they also would never ignore or encourage it either. True happiness comes from living God's plan as he planned it. All other substitutes/pervertions of that plan are only false and short lived pleasures
by Shaunocerous on April 15th, 2007
Hmmm, popularity? It's actually pathetic how the religious right can try to take the moral high ground at times. It appears that all a preacher needs do is take a course and ditch the spotlight for a bit and they're suddenly "cured" of liking pitching, or is it catching for the other team. Not to mention the drugs. No idea why you people can't live and let live . Or are you all too busy trying to stay in your own closet?
by scubabob on April 16th, 2007
I'm with Shaunocerous on this. Even if one denies the Truth, homosexuality has never enhanced a society. Look at history, namely Rome. Accepting all types of behaviors is nice and open-minded, until your country collapses around you.
by Anonymous on April 17th, 2007
I think a country is more likely to collapse because of religious fundamentalism than of a few people being gay.
by Engeltje on April 17th, 2007
Annon is correct, but you choose to ignore because it goes againt you sexual feelings.
by Charmaine Jay on April 24th, 2007
Hate to break it to you, but Rome did not fall because of its permissive sexual practises. Rome fell because the emperor converted to Christianity, moved the capital around and destablised the way in which it could be defended by this decentralisation of resources
by Anonymous on April 25th, 2007
Lol, Redrum, that's correct! Look, Anon and Jay, only a small percentage of the population is gay and this could not affect the rise and fall of any society. In the animal kingdom there is also a percentage of gay animals, which proves that homosexuality is normal and natural.
by Engeltje on April 25th, 2007
Red if rome fell because of christianity, it was because none of them were practising what they preached because homosexuality is against christianity, it fell because people like today chose to ignore good moral standards.
by Charmaine Jay on April 26th, 2007
Um, no. Charmaine Jay. It fell because the government was decentralised by the movement of the capital to Constantinople under Constantine and back to Rome again, this significantly weakened the economy and resources and made it harder to defend the culture against other 'barbarian' states rising in Europe. Homosexuality had nothing to do with Rome falling.
by Anonymous on April 26th, 2007
LOL! You go, Redrum! Wow, it's been too long since I've heard a good "burn" like that one...
by Sunni1 on July 31st, 2007
Rome was strong when its familys were strong, if men have a family to come back to they have a will to survive, if you look deeper into the roman culture you will see the main reason it fell was the fall of the family unit and the increase in homosexuality, look at society today it is going down hill fast alomg with its debaste moral standards, its the same old story but on a world wide scale. SUNNI1 I take it you are an homosexual?
by Charmaine Jay on October 23rd, 2007
I think you're seeking "debased" rather than "debaste" -- to "debaste" would mean to remove the butter from the turkey, which is actually the bird that came to mind as the closest association when I tried hard to consider your Instant Mini-History of Rome (as told to you by the Tooth Fairy, apparently?). I think we're going to need to cite sources for this. Preferably some historian who's been out of detox for at least 6 months :)

by Frank Further on September 9th, 2008
yes. I choose to be with my wife.
I have many GAY friends and when i have posed the question seriously. They each, stated (in their own words) that if were to be totally honest with themselves, it was a choice they made.
by atreyu on September 12th, 2008
No doubt it was a choice they made -- based on being attracted to people of the same sex. So what? It doesn't explain why they were attracted to people of the same sex. Obviously everyone has a choice about their actions, that doesn't mean they have a choice about their dispositions.
I've never been attracted to men, it's just not something I have a choice about. Gay men are, and it seems clearly not something they have a choice about either.
by HasntBeen on September 12th, 2008

"No doubt it was a choice they made"
"it seems clearly not something they have a choice about"
learn not to stick a foot in your mouth and maybe we can have a clear and civil conversation.
by atreyu on September 12th, 2008
Yes, they have a choice about their BEHAVIOR. They don't have a choice about their DESIRE. If you re-read my comment carefully, instead of jumping to conclusions, you will see the distinction clearly indicated. Nobody is saying gays don't have a choice about their behavior, just like nobody is saying that mechanics didn't have a choice to become mechanics. But why did they want to work on cars? That's much more difficult to answer.
by HasntBeen on September 12th, 2008
you said:
" Nobody is saying gays don't have a choice about their behavior "
Im sure i can find you plenty of people that say that.
by atreyu on September 12th, 2008
Actually, that was only the first half of his sentence. You're conveniently leaving out the rest in your quotation because it doesn't fit with your agenda.
by Carmella on September 12th, 2008
Yes, well if I see them, I am inclined to correct them. The problem is "being gay" is ambiguous. What does it mean? It can mean "has sex with same gender" (clearly, choiceful) or it can mean "is attracted to same gender" (probably not choiceful).
In either case, my position is that it's none of our business what a gay person either wants or does, as long as they otherwise are not harming the innocent. That's what personal responsibility and freedom are all about. So what if they chose or didn't choose? It's not mine to run someone else's life.
by HasntBeen on September 12th, 2008
I like your answer. Its nice to be able to hear from someone who can express logically their position.
I almost fully agree with you. it is their choice to be with who they want. I beleive their are a very small few who have an absolute attraction to the same sex though. I believe for the most part they have a small inclination and due to pain, suffering or otherwise some point in their life, they made a conscious decision to go gay all the way (so to say).
Maybe daddy beat them too much, maybe raped them, maybe gave too much love, not enough. maybe dad was the picture perfect role model for any father to be. The fact is, we dont know all the factors that may or may not drive a person to this lifestyle (that is how the gay community describes it, right? a lifestyle?). Well i lived in san fransisco for 25 years so i know its called a lifestyle.
anyways, i do agree with you. and i fully believe its not my right (nor do i care to) take a persons freedom from choosing that lifestyle
by atreyu on September 12th, 2008
So what is your agenda on this thread, and why do you sound so angry? Live and let live, yes?
by HasntBeen on September 12th, 2008
agenda? oh dont listen to carmella. she just hates kids and i called her out on it.
I have fun posting, look at my original post to your comment was there any anger within that comment?
Carmella disliked a conversation i had with her and has followed me around tagging everything of mine (not that i care about points). So the question should be, whats her agenda and why is she so angry?
otherwise, my agenda is to share my views and if i see hypocrites or people that make no sense, i have no problems calling them out. I saw none of that with you but you made an interesting comment that i thought would turn out to have some interesting conversation. and lead to a better understanding. I was right. in our conversation i have found out your position and respect you for that.
Simple as that. ( i have not seen this with you ) but i have no idea why people take such personal feelings to negative comments about them.
I can be curt and i apologize if i was with you. it was unintentional

by Carmella on September 12th, 2008
excuse me??? i owe no one an apology.
by atreyu on September 12th, 2008
And yes... please read the thread... I was right in my posting.
by atreyu on September 12th, 2008
No, that was when you chose to act on the urges. Everybody has a choice to have sex, whether it be with a man or a woman -- what people *don't* have a choice about is who they are attracted to. I'm straight, I never chose to be *attracted* to men or women, but I *chose* who to have sex with.
by Carmella on October 10th, 2008
The Bible tells you to kill homosexuals, that it's ok to own slaves, and that a rapist must buy his victim from her father. I take it you agree with all this too?
by Carmella on October 11th, 2008
I believe that countering a sound argument with an insult and a few unrelated Bible verses shows far more wisdumb than the preceding comment.
by HasntBeen on October 11th, 2008
lol I love people, so diverse, you never know what your going to get by asking a simple question so heavily weighted by linking personal behavior to excuses to be roused to anger. or in english, religious judgement from an outside standpoint removed from facts or knowledge of the topic in question. to properly bash gays you must first have stumbled upon the gay lifestyle, want to throw a punch? first you have to be just or your just closed minded. heard of the kkk? I had a buddy drop the klan for who is now his beautifull black wife, justice in its purest. Bahsers beware.

Leviticus 20:13 is one famous instance: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them."
A lot on this topic can be found here: http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_bibl.htm
by HasntBeen on February 5th, 2009
On gays: Leviticus 20:13 (KJV): "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them."
On slaves: Leviticus 25:44-46 (NLT): However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way.
On rape: Deuteronomy 22:28-29 (NLT): If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.
by Carmella on February 5th, 2009
I assert that what keeps verses like these from completely exploding the entire modern fundamentalist regressive movement is only the incredible power of the human mind to stare straight at black and call it white.
by HasntBeen on February 5th, 2009
Hmm and this particular Anonymous that started this last round of discussion seems to have spent more time in the "sin" categories than in religion. I find that...funny.
by scubabob on February 6th, 2009
The Bible blatently speaks against homosexuality in Leviticus and considers homosexuality an abomination against God. How much more black and white can it be explained or understood. People are not born gay because God would not make someone that way and then have it referred to as an abomination in the Holy Bible. People tend to make excuses for what they want to do or for there own perversions. Homosexuality is a perversion and not a way of life and I cannot understand how people still tend to lead this life knowing they will be damned to eternal suffering in hell. Your words are true.
by Anonymous on February 17th, 2009
Yes, you're right: the Bible does say that. That's how we know it's wrong -- because it's obviously immoral to order people to do things like kill homosexuals, allow rapists to buy their victims, and enslave your fellow man. That's not God speaking, it's human beings... the proof is in the outrageous immorality of the verses involved.
What you're doing is turning common sense upside down, and saying that (a) the Bible must be the literal word of God, so therefore (b) these horrific passages are acceptable. Not true.
by HasntBeen on February 17th, 2009
I ought to become involved some sort of religion that's holy text says it's " just fine and dandy to draw, quarter, spit on and enslave the family members" of some of these born again christian types. That would be ok to do then according to some. It is after all written in a holy book. Right.
by scubabob on February 17th, 2009
Old Testament is cut and dry. If you disobeyed God's commands, you got what you deserved. There was no mercy, grace or forgiveness. But when Jesus came in New Testament, he brought all those things by dying on the cross for our sins. Romans 7:23 says: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. We, today, deserved death for our sinful and unpure choices. Our society is so corrupted that it is sick to even think about it, but Jesus forgives and gives us new life if we ask Him for His forgiveness.
by Anonymous on February 19th, 2009
Hmmm... so God changed his mind about the best way to relate to humanity? If you were unfortunate enough to be born in the old days, you got fried for the weaknesses he created you with, but if you were one of the Lucky Ones™ born later, you got a Get Out of Jail Free card? Interesting: a double standard, based on a factor the victim has no control over. I wonder if that could be considered justice?
Anyway, you've completely ignored the point: it is wrong to kill homosexuals, it is wrong to buy your rape victim from her father, it is wrong to enslave your fellow man. The Bible seems to have a hard time telling right from wrong, if you take these verses at face value -- but you ARE taking them at face value in your argument, so it seems you've inherited the Bible's moral confusion. And now you want to tell US what's "sinful and unpure"? Hmm...
by HasntBeen on February 19th, 2009
Well, you completely missed the point about God and His faithfulness and loving character. And what you wrote in first paragraph is so not what I said. What you do is twist Bible Verses and what I said to implie something total horried and awful about God. God didn't tell humans to kill humans because He said do not murder. By those verses, He showed that what He siad, He meant it. Go ahead and paraphrase it in a way that it is support your answer.
by Anonymous on February 19th, 2009
If God has a loving character, why is he so violent? Why is the OT so full of him ordering the Israelites to slaughter everyone, raining down fire from heaven, kill, kill, kill?
Really, to any reasonable, objective person -- someone who is not trying to hold their belief system together with duct tape -- it's obvious what is going on: the OT represents a lot of ethnocentric viewpoints that the Hebrew leaders promulgated to promote and protect their group. It wasn't God talking, it was people talking. That's why so much of it is we-centered, violent, and repressive.
Scroll forward a few thousand years, and folks such as yourself just IGNORE the ugly parts, and focus on the love and faithfulness and yadayada. Well I like the nice parts too, who doesn't? But you can't just skip past the evil in your reading. Read it ALL.
