Why do we assume heaven is "up there" and hell is "down there"?

    Well, the reference is made a few times in the Bible, but here is one example for each...



    As for your "heaven is 'up there" question...

    Acts 1

    8 "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

    9 "And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight."



    As for your "hell is 'down there" question...

    2 Peter 2:4 "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment..."

    • what about cultures who worshiped the sun and belived heaven to be up there before the bible e.g. Ancient Egypt, Greece...?
