You may want to try some hot pepper plants like cayenne and jalapeno. Garlic or chives or onions might help a little. Thorny plants (like blackberries) or plants with "rough" edges and tight vines will definitely help. Some people put down pecan shells (it is rough to walk on) and similar material as a mulch to keep cats out.

Sprinkling black pepper around will help. Also, there are ground hot peppers available which you could sprinkle. Often an inexpensive resource is an oriental market/grocery store. Spraying a hot pepper tea will help...mix in garlic to give it extra "ooomphf". You can make your own tea by grinding a few of the items in a blender with water. Cayenne is hot, but habanero will be even more potent. (Watch-out on touching that hot habanero...wow!) By the way, these hot pepper teas make for great pest (bug) control sprays. Garlic adds to the "riddance" factor. People have even had success on chasing squirrels out of attics with the hot pepper teas. Fox urine in the garden is known to keep away rabbits and deer. Usually a feed store sells Fox Urine. It might work for cats. A rotten egg in the garden may help. I guess there could also be a solution with a dog, or one of these electric wire "fences", or the plastic 50' roll fence that Walmart sells for about $10.

    Adding a bit of information:

Lava rock is rough and a good animal deterrent. Lava sand may work and is extremely beneficial as an amendment for lawn and garden. It has paramagnetic properties and also other properties that make it an important choice as a soil amendment.

This is gross, but often keeps pets from lying in an area. Take their poop (or maybe any poop) and bury it under the area that they frequent.
