RAM is random access memory, it is lost when the computer is switched off.
ROM is read only memory and it is permanent. The most obvious example is the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) which is a tiny permanent program that runs when you turn on your computer and it prepares disk drives and processor to load the operating system from disk.
