What is the origin of the tradition of putting up a Christmas tree?

    I believe that it was used as a Solstice tree before the 1600's. The tree was tall and when its shadow was a certain proportion to its height, it marked the winter solstice.

    Pope Gregory of about this time incorporated the tree and his own birthday as well as the sinterklaas into the Dec 25 Chrismas that many celebrate to this day.
