For any who have this condition or know someone who does:

Xanax or other benzodiazepines or anti-anxiety drugs only mask the symptoms, and do not get to the ROOT of the problem--why is the person having anxiety attacks? The benzodiazepines are also HIGHLY addictive. The person having the anxiety needs a good cognitive counselor to find out the cause of the anxiety. If all an anxiety sufferer does is take pills, they will be on them for life.

My mother and aunt were both were on pills all of their adult lives and it all could have been avoided for the most part if they had not been so resistent to seeing a "therapist."

    • Benzos are not addictive. Substances such as heroin, crack, meth...are addictive-that's why they're illegal. Those who take benzos need to be v. mindful of tolerance (requiring stronger, more frequent dosing to obtain the same effect) which occurs over long periods of time... Many individuals must take life-long medications despite one-on-one and/or group counseling; these individuals more often are 'hard wired' genetically...usually there's some family member who suffers from anxiety, panic or another form of behavioral health disorder. Not every panic/anxiety episode has a root cause.

    • Seriously, Tuscan? You think just because something is legal, that makes it not addictive? Then tell me why there are people who get addicted to alcohol, people who get addicted to cigarettes, people who get addicted to shopping, people who get addicted to video games, people who get addicted to the Internet, etc...
