A master cylinder is the device that holds a reservoir of brake fluid and forces it into the brakes when the brake pedal is stepped on.

    • A little bit general, but essentially correct. When you step on the brake pedal, the pedal pushes on a linkage, which pushes on a rod in the master cylinder, which pushes hydraulic fluid to the brake components at the wheel, which push on the brake linings, which create friction and slow the car down.
