I would venture to say that there really isn't out and out opposition to women in combat in Iraq. It has long been military policy that women were not allowed to serve in certain combat arms branches like infantry and armor, so this is not specific to Iraq. There are also plenty of jobs in Iraq that are not designated as combat arms and women can definitely help out a lot which is why both men and women are being sent. Finally, some women actually do find themselves in combat because even if they are part of rear-deployed unit they could still come under attack in hostile areas which is why many women in Iraq like their male counterparts carry and operate weapons.
