What color suit should I wear to a formal to coordinate with my dates chocolate brown gown?

    Wear a black or dark jacket with a matching chocolate brown vest underneath,

    The brown will distinguish that you are matching your date, but the jacket will tone it down a bit and help it from becoming overwhelming.

    Add a chocolate hankerchief sticking slightly out of the jacket's pocket too to accessorize.
    Patterns or contrasting browns look good too.

    Keep the shoes black though.
