How did explorers decide which way was North and South, i.e., which way was "up" on a map?

    Well, the direction of North is based on the magnetic direction of a compass towards the pole, so the choice was between North and South. As early explorers were all from Europe which is in the northern hemisphere, there was really no competition as far as the choice goes, and the north pole was used.
