The polar shift is something that happens every few hundred thousand (maybe million) years or so, basically the poles swap, so what we now know as north will become south and vice versa.
This will have an effect on anything that relies on the earths magnetic field for use, however most of these items are so small that it would not matter at all, a compass for example, now it points north, but after a shift it would point to what we now call south.
