Some good points were mentioned in the other answer. A common and natural remedy for controlling algae is using cornmeal, preferrably horticultural cornmeal. Down here in Texas, it is often put in "tanks" ("tank" - this is really just a term used to describe a big pond, often manmade, where cattle and horses drink), but it is also used for backyard ponds. There are many benefitial uses for cornmeal. It can, and should be, placed on the yard or garden to help ward off harmful fungi which can effect plants and their root system. Doing a search on this website will pull up some other uses.
