As an experienced grower in soil and hydroponics, both indoors and out... I'll give you the correct answer for this.

First off, yes. Different 'species' give different effects. Sativa gives a trippy, in your head high. Indica gives you a couchlock, munchies type high.

But it goes much further then that. Much further.

Due to technological advances in agriculture and horticulture, not to mention genetics and techniques, marijuana is now slightly more powerful then before.

Not only is technology better, knowledge itself is allowing breeders to design strains. In countries like Holland where marijuana laws aren't as harsh, breeders create thousands of plants to find the best candidate. They do this again and select another fine candidate.

Then they cross the two strains. The result is a hybrid with the genes of superior parents. After stabilization, this newly created strain will probably have the effects they desired.

This is somewhat along the lines of designer drugs. They are designing plants for specific purposes.

I have a vast knowlage of strains and their effects, so I will give you some examples.

G13 - Rumour has it that this strain was smuggled out of an university program which studied marijuana. Apparently it had been genetically engineered to have a higher THC content. This may or may not be true, but it's potency is unmatchable to this day.

Chemo - Designed to provide the best relief to medical marijuana users. Very strong.

B.C. Skunk - Developed by biker gangs in Canada to be potent and yield well. Usually comes from B.C. into the states. This is why the 8 billion/year marijuana market in BC is bigger then their 7billion/year lumber industry, famous for the giant redwoods!

Strains are usually designed for potency, colour, bag appeal, yield, smell, taste, size, and growing time.

This information is correct. If you are interested in this type of thing, check out www.overgrow.com. Be warned that this is a site about cannabis, and minors under 18 are not permitted.
