The city of Mecca is the most holy city in Islam. (#2 Medina, #3 Jerusalem)

It is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and also the birthplace of Islam.

The Ka'aba is also in the center of Mecca which to Muslims was built by the Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael.

There is no violence or sexual contact allowed in Mecca so Mecca in a way is sacred in that sense.

    • In addition to being the holiest city for Muslims, Mecca is a normal city with people and families living there on permanent basis.

The statement about violence and sexual contact is true only for pilgrims during the Hajj and does not apply to residents.
