POINTS UP FOR A GREAT QUESTION!
The best time for you to consider breeding any dog is after you take the time to GET SOME EDUCATION about proper breeding practices so that you are using the correct vocabulary for this topic.

What are the 4 stages of a normal heat cycle?
How many of your Bitch's relatives on her Dam's side held Grand Champion Titles? How many on the Dog's side?
What qualities does your Bitch have that can be improved upon with the RIGHT breeding?

What's the difference between a bitch and a dog?

Start going to shows and meet other breeders who CARE about their animals, the bloodlines and the IMPROVEMENT to the breed so that YOU can become an excellent and responsible breeder, instead of someone with a purebred bitch who knows zero to very little about what she is doing!

You need to get in with the responsible breeders and start SHOWING your Bitch so she can win her points and titles and PROVE that she deserves the very best Dog out there to breed with! You do not want just some purebred nothing dog that you don't even know anything about what he has to offer your bitch and the resulting puppies...

You want to learn your girl's GOOD POINTS and her NOT SO GOOD POINTS so that you choose a dog that has females in his line that will MAKE UP FOR any characteristics YOUR bitch is less than perfect in or is lacking...you want to shoot for BETTER quality puppies than what most of the breed currently IS.

Otherwise you are not responsible, you are just another uninformed and uncaring back yard breeder, about three steps behind a Puppy Mill...and trust me...Breeding any animal that is NOT a food production animal is NOT a quick way to get rich...Breeders spend more than they earn off their litters as a rule!

Take the high road here and become a Breeder who others look to as someone who CARES enough to improve the breed as a whole...YOU CAN DO THIS...it's just a matter of meeting others who share your passion for this breed, and then listening and learning, showing your girl and READING tons about bloodlines so you make the best choices..from OTHER TITLED DOGS whose owners will WANT to breed to your bitch!

Please do not contribute to the over population of dogs and puppies put to death DAILY (in the hundreds in the USA) because they do not get adopted..and remember even if you breed irresponsibly and have homes for YOUR puppies...you are contributing to the DEATH of that many other pups and dogs...true story.

    • You think it is rude that I believe you can learn and become a great breeder? I want you to think about WHY you want to breed before you do it...you do not come across as knowledgeable on this topic because you are not even using the correct words to describe your bitch's cycle...I want to give you a chance to do great things, NOT become part of the on-going PROBLEM of surplus dogs and puppies that get killed DAILY in the country...put your ego on the shelf and learn how to become part of the solution to this horrible problem..you CAN choose to do that...I believe in you, and I'm sorry if you missed my point here. I'm not trying to hurt your feelings...I'm trying to get you to think about what you are doing and WHY you want to do it...BEFORE you do it. I GAVE YOU POINTS because you asked a good and intelligent question...silly goose!

    • Ok, I am sorry I blew up. I have a pure bred german shepherd that I love dearly and would like to have one of her puppies. I do not want to harm her in any way. She is on her third cycle and I wanted to know if It was harming her in any way. If thats the case I will have her fixed. I am a proud member of the aspca and would never do anythin to harm an animal. She is the love of my life.

    • I absolutely believe you...I feel the same way about my "mutts." It may be that you SHOULD get into showing her...she is just as likely to do very well as she is not to do well...American GSD's do have some problems that need to be addressed. This doesn't mean YOUR girl has those problems, even if some of her bloodline does. The breed became popular (remember the tv show Rin Tin Tin?) and the back yard breeders and Puppy Mills took advantage of it, just as they always seem to do...we can "thank" Disney for many of the problems that we now see with a LOT of purebred dogs ...Cockers, Dalmatians, Irish Setters...all from popular movies, all with issues the breeds did not have before. Health issues, Temperament issues...very sad. The third Heat is not too soon or too late...it's a reasonable time. But you really need to know her bloodline history and that of the Dog, before you consider breeding. Showing her will also help PROVE that she will IMPROVE the GSD breed.

    • I can truly understand your feeling like you want some part of her to live on. Since I have always chosen mutts for my personal dogs, (despite the fact that I have trained dogs for 30 years and have access to many wonderful purebred breeds) all my dogs have been neutered or spayed or when I was a lot younger my male simply wasn't allowed to breed. I sort of created a "line of connection" in my own head...Childhood dogs Jeff and Ginger, then I had Pal (my first personal dog) first Jeff and later Ginger died, got Maggie, Pal died (old age/heart disease) but Maggie lived on, I got Bossco, Maggie died (old age). I could "trace" all of my personal dogs back to our first FAMILY DOG Jeff...even though they weren't blood related dogs...emotionally TO ME they were connected...in my memories of the dogs I loved. Minor hic-cup! As Bossco was aging,he didn't want to SHARE me with another puppy! He made that impression very clear. So, a month or so after he was put down I started looking for one.

    • I honestly believe that there is no way, even through breeding or God help us all cloning that I could find or create a dog that would be as grand as any other I've had, known and loved. Each one is unique, not just because of their breeding or type, but in their temperament and in our relationship. Each dog has brought something different than the last to the relationship and the learning experience...I miss each one so damn much, it doesn't matter WHEN I had to say good by to them, I still cry because sometimes I just miss them too much for words. But, the way I see it...when I go out and adopt a new dog...that old one knows and sees that they loved me so well, it added to the addition for THAT special love, they did their job, lived their life and opened the door for ANOTHER needy and wonderful pup/dog to find a forever home with ME. If you looked at the ones on LAST DAY I KNOW you would bawl just as I do, you have THAT TYPE of loving heart. What you feel for your dog is NOT BAD!

    • It is understandable...100% understandable...you don't want to ever say good by in a sense! And if you choose to show her, you may find that you SHOULD consider breeding her...she may help improve this breed. But if NOT, you might want to consider another tribute to the love you've shared when it comes time to say good by....a tribute to her spirit, courage, and love given to you...by giving as good a love, heart and home to a new dog...purebred (there are many in the pounds also put to sleep weekly) or mutt...she will see and know that she gave you enough love...that you simply had to get that new puppy and let that love spill over into the new life. I really do believe they know our hearts.

    • No worries...it's hard to give a complete picture of what you are thinking and feeling in the amount of space for a question...but your loving heart shines though. And if you desire you can change your negative points to positive...That's why when I rarely issue a negative I always leave feed back (which you did!) so that discussion has a chance to take place...I've changed my neg on others to a positive more than once...If you do decided to check out showing her...DO let us know so we can cheer her wins!

    • So..the only way you feel a dog is GOOD is if you "SHOW" it??I personally found your statement about dogs offensive and a wee pompus and rude...
Take your head out of your ass!
Just because someone wants to breed their dog does not mean it is NOT sure bread...etc...god forbid someone didnt call their dog a "bitch".
Just because someone did not POST the proper "lingo" does not make them a ignorant ass like you! True story!
