This answer is at best misinforming. To be technical, her title was Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. She did not lose the title "Princess Diana" as she never was "Princess Diana". Only women of the Blood Royal are permitted to use Princess to precede their Christian name (ie HRH The Princess Margaret).

Mostly correct, Insane - Only women who are a Princess in their own right my use the title "The Princess xx" or "Princess xx"
A woman may be granted the title and style of Princess or Royal Princess in her own right, by The Queen, should She desire to grant it.... it's not likely, most certainly. There is a precedent for her granting the style as a courtesy.
She granted Her Aunt Alice the Style and Title of Princess... after the death of her husband Alice requested it to avoid confusion with her son, the new Duke's, wife.
In UK, a woman inherits her husband's title and style by courtesy via her marriage. So, Prince Charles' title/style is HRH The Prince of Wales, Diana's, while married (and techinally Camilla's as well) was HRH The Princess of Wales.
If he was not granted "The Prince of Wales" - Diana would have been HRH The Princess Charles - NOT - HRH The Princess Di
