You're reading Why do some people call themselves vegetarians but still eat fish?
Comments
Nice anc fancy name but if it's dead and you are eating it, I'm terribly sorry but you are not a vegetarian. Don't call yourself one. It confuses everyone.

Even worse still, some people actually call themselves vegetarians just because they don't eat mammals... but they will eat birds, like chicken. Of course, the biggest stretch is when they're vegetarians just because they "don't eat red meat".
I agree, if it was once observably sentient, and then you eat it, you're not really a vegetarian. The original definition of vegetarian was basically vegan, but became diluted over time, hence the need for the separate term, and the whole "ovo", "lacto", and goodness-forbid, "pesco" categories.
As a comment, most people hyphenate it, as "ovo-lacto-pesco-vegetarian" not one word.

We have both eggplant and milkweed on our property. This must be why 'vegetarians' can eat eggs and dairy. I'm waiting for the dogwood and foxtail to ripen. Then i can wok the dog-yum.
(Okay, i'm on vacation from my usual serious answers. No offense meant and no apology coming.
Have a great day.

dude! you aren't vegetarian... people who eat eggs shouldn't be called vegetarian. only us vegans are vegetarian. thye rest of you just misuse the title
by issy-e on August 14th, 2008
I agree with issy-e that only vegans are true vegetarians. What we eat is a very personal matter, not for others' judgment. I suppose we could dream up long, involved titles for each individual based on his own diet.
If people like to call themselves vegetarian when they're really not, whom are they hurting. It's only a label.
Some people believe that they are abstaining from meat during certain seasons because they don't eat mammals but eat fish. They may be deluding themselves but aren't hurting anyone else.
My suggestion is to eat whatever you think is best, accept the results and don't impose your will on anyone else.
Does this sound workable?
by bruceytom on August 16th, 2008
Eh, it's sort of workable, except that people who eat meat or animal products ARE, by their very nature, imposing themselves on others - on the beings they pay to be raised for torture and/or slaughter so they can enjoy them. I'm not a vegan, although I was for a long time. But the only animal products I eat are whey protein isolate (from dairy) for health and fitness, and certified-humane cage-free vegetarian-fed eggs. Don't wear leather, wool, silk, or any of it (well, I borrowed a friend's leather belt because my non-leather one broke and I haven't gotten around to getting a new one, but still). I'm pretty okay with people who eat eggs and dairy (especially if they only eat cage-free free range eggs) calling themselves vegetarians. But fish is a bit ridiculous. At that point it's like you just enjoy the sound of calling yourself a vegetarian.

I too agree with issy-e. How can you eat fish and call yourself a vegetarian. This is akin to blasphemy. However, it is a very good thing that you are abstaining from the higher forms of animals by giving the four legged and the two legged relieves from the constant yell and slaughters inside the hell-house around the world we know so well. So it is still better than those that blindly eats and or hunts anything without an atom of conscience.

Cows are bred and killed for meat. What is the injustice behind that? They are nothing more than a growing source of energy, created to be harvested for use of its flesh. Is there something wrong with that?
Honestly, it's people like you that put vegetarians to shame. You don't eat meat since you think that you're "saving the planet" or "protecting mother nature", but you don't have the slightest clue that nature involves the birth and death of all living creatures. Grass grows, cows eat grass, predatory animals and humans eat cows, bacteria and fungi eats and decomposes predatory/herbivorous plants and animals (humans included), and grass grows. This is 1st grade material, something we all know as the "food chain". Of course, you being the stereotypical uneducated "vegetarian", you're probably too busy munching on a chicken leg and proudly declaring your "non-redmeat" diet to the world.
