What are some ways to get my 12 month old to learn how to spoon-feed himself?

I let my daughter try to eat on her own at that age but it wasnt until recently (she is 2) that she has been able to spoon feed herself without making a mess. she managed with a fork really well at a year old though. gerber makes a little spoon and fork set that arent too sharp and my daughter loved these
