I believe in the life of Jesus as a man. As far as a leader of a new religion he was not the only one. At that time gnostic cults were everywhere. Christianity started out as a gnostic cult.

Probably, due to his persecution, Jesus's life and story was told more often then the others, helping to establish the beginnings of the faith, as well as the story of his miracles and rebirth.

There is a really interesting book about a "newly" discovered gospel, that of Judas. Its called the Lost Gospel Of Judas of Iscariot by Ehrman. It interprets the newly discovered gospels as presenting Judas as Jesus's savior for he delivered him to those who would kill his physical self. allowing his spirit, which was his true self (a very gnostic idea) to be liberated.
