Obviously the majority of people who have answered here have been influenced by the Bible, or at least refer to it. I personally beleive that the body decomposes/gets cremated, whatever, so biologically you will be reincorporated back into the food chain as a source of carbon for bacteria whatever, and eventually become part of e.g. a dog. So the idea of reincarnation as some religions beleive in isn't too far-fetched at all.

As to the idea that we have a soul and this goes upstairs or downstairs does not ruing true to me. Perhaps this sounds too cold and clinical but you are made up of composites of the genetic material from your two parents. This, and chemical components from the environment (food etc) produces you. It is all tangible material. Your organs, your life and your memories are just a form of chemical reactions that occur during your lifetime (admittedly how memories themselves are created, no-one yet knows but this does not mean that they live on after death).

So in my opinion (and I am entitled to that regardless of how much you agree or disagree), the body is recycled and that is that.

    • Our physical body just returns to dust. We have a spirit though.

    • Psalm 146:4 "His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his (thoughts) do perish?
Eccl.9:10 "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the (dead, they are -conscious of nothing-at all."
Ezek. 18:4 "the (soul) that is sinning---it itself will die."

Thoughts perish! Conscious of nothing! Soul dies.
This is why we need a resurrection if we are to live again.

No immortal soul...Not a Bible teaching.
