What is the origin of the phrase "son of a bitch"?

    I realize it's Greek, I realize it is a female dog....but when was the phrase used? Someone just all of a sudden yelled out 'You son of a female dog"? I don't think so.

    • 2 Samuel 20... a man is called the son of a Bichri and he shames that clan through his actions thus making "you son of a Bichri" an insult (note resemblance to "son of a bitch"). Perhaps a mix up of words? Ex: I could care less is commonly used while a couldn't care less is the true phrase
