It seems to me that there's something very backward about the current practice of advertising these drugs to the prospective patients. The ads are targeted at the general population, with the general message urging us to “ask your doctor if such-and-such is right for you.” Often, they don't even tell us what condition the drug is supposed to treat. They just give us a vague picture of how our life can be better if we're on this drug, and urge us to talk to our doctor about it.
In my view, the correct process for determining whether a particular prescription drug is right for a particular patient does not begin with a patient learning of the drug, and going to his doctor to ask for a prescription for that drug. It begins with the doctor examining the patient, determining that the patient has a medical condition that needs to be treated, and prescribing a drug that is appropriate for that condition.
Do you remember ever seeing anyone in an ad who reminded you of someone you have met personally?
