What exactly does the phrase jolly hockey sticks mean, never heard before yesterday, is it an Eastern US phrase?

    I think what they were saying was "Jolly Hell" (H-e-double-hockey-sticks) as kindof an exasperated thing to say. That sounds like it comes from the UK.
