Question

Help answer this question below.

I have a Ford Explorer 1991, the engine runs rough at Idle and it reves up ok. But when I put it in gear (5 speed 4x4) it has no power...I replaced the engine, same problem, replace the computer by the right kick panel, same symtom. No Power?

well... running rough, and no power(torque) I would ask first if all the plugs are firing. even 1 cylinder not firing would cause significant loss in power, more noticable in a 6 cyl than the 8 cyl, but the concept would be the same, if you have a new engine, i would assume the compression is up to spec. I would check the plugs, wires, distibutor(assuming it's not fird by coil packs), and coil. A good spark tester lets you hook it inline, and adjust the distance he spark must jump. The little ones with lights on them just tell you there is spark, not how strong it is. After that I would check air dlivery(filter and such) and the fuel system to make sure it is gtting adequate fuel. But in my experience as an auto tech, the spark, whether non existant in a cylinder, or just really weak, seems to be the number 1 culprit. Hope this helps

    • Thanx, I will check the fuel and spark. It does have a coil cluster...
