Stigmata is supposed to be wounds that appear on the places of the body where Jesus recieved them. Slashes across the back, thorn marks around the head, a puncture in the side, nail marks on the wrists and feet. These are to appear without warning on people who live a life closely resembling the rightious living of Christ. It's considered a great honor to be so afflicted even though stigmata is almost always fatal and very painful. The thinking is that there is no better way to depart than having God give a stamp of approval on your life as He calls you home. The legitamacy of stigmata is uncertain. It seems to only be recognized by the Catholic Branch of Christianity. Most people have never heard of it outside of the movie by that name and far less have ever seen an example of it in real life.
