I finally got to hear Suicide Silence play and it was OK. But why does the lead singer use two totally different vocal styles (one sounds like Deicide and the other sounds like Cradle Of Filth)?

They are different variations in the "rock" genre from alternative to metal, and metal has so many variations to it explain how metal goes from metal to heavy metal, then thrash metal, and death metal, black metal. Is it because the sound becomes heavier?

whats the difference?

I have gone to music stores and have seen a separate section for Death Metal. That is how I distinguish between the too.

larsylover: The difference to me has to do mainly with the themes. Death metal deals with obscure, violent imagery. Along with that the music that goes with it is much more brooding, somber, distorted. A fact I don't like about that style is the vocals, they're almost unintelligible with most of them being grunt-like screams. Just my opinion.

dude, KEEP and open mind
i used to hate the vocals, but since i loved the thundering drums and frantic guitar so much i kept listening to it over and over again (at first only when i worked out) and eventually the vocals actually felt much better and more appropriate for the style of music than clean singing
your missing out on half of metal, the dark side, that is
and btw DM vocals arent screaming, they're growling and hard to do convincingly
some modern metal and metalcore (most metalcore) is screaming, NOT DM
