Question

Help answer this question below.

Why do Americans always identify themselves by ethnicity? e.g. "Irish-American", "Italian-American" etc. Also, why do they consider themselves to actually be culturally Irish or Italian (or whathaveyou) when they are culturally American?

Because my country is a tapestry of European, African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American and Native American influence, we have so many cultures intertwined here that we identify ourselves based on what culture we feel the closest connection with.

It has a "tribal" component to it too it...belonging to a group within the whole.

Not to mention a lot people have no clue what a Sami-American is, so I just say Swedish-American most of the time! ^^

And the fact I'm marrying an Afro-Puerto Rican proves the fact that my country is becoming more and more "brown" as time goes on. Good, I like that...if there's anything America can claim, being the most diverse country is one of them!
