    inconsequential

If we flew instead of walked, I could see a potential for a vertical format. However, we walk, drive, and live on the ground and the "action" in our lives (people, structures) is largely along the plane of the horizon.

Yes, there are skyscrapers, but we're inside them on the horizontal surfaces of each floor. Our heads move from side to side, taking in what is happening. And outside, we're looking at the line/crowd of people, the cars moving on the street, and the array of merchandise in the window. A horizontal format, and particularly widescreen, represents that well.

As far as alternate formats, IMAX is wonderful because it dwarfs you, physically and perceptually. The effect of scale, especially in certain settings (like ocean or space) really makes me feel inside of the action, and relatively insignificant compared to the film subject... like I'm literally just a fly on the wall.
