Question

When asking to be someones friend on AB, should it be because you may want to meet them or talk to them in email and develop an actual friendship, or is it simply about making "virtual" friends?

    inconsequential

I guess it should fulfill whatever need the user has. Some people just need to see a full list there, to make themselves feel better or for appearance sake. The Friend pages hold 60 users each, and some people have filled 1 or 2 pages already. Can you really have a meaningful relationship with that many people? I'm doubtful.

The people on my friend list are people that I'm grateful to, whose answers I admire, whose humour I enjoy, and/or who I have exchanged meaningful comments with. I hope that I will begin to develop more of a personal friendship with each over time, on here or though email. Or Facebook (from whence I came :).

Consequently, I don't ask for or accept invitations randomly. My list is growing slowly as I "click" with others. But everyone should use the system as they wish, or, refuse to use it at all (as some notable users have done).
