Is the cab and front clip on a 2000 F350 longer or shorter than a cab and front clip on a 1986 F350 and by how much? Not a wheelbase issue.

A+, except the frame is exactly the same. Suspension and brakes, may be different, however. Also, you will need a new driveshaft. The driveshaft will be completely different depending on the components, spline count etc. Like you said, it's far easier, and probably cheaper, to just buy a 4 wheel drive.
