I've been lobbying school boards to remove cursive from elementary curriculums for years (and have had mild success at it). It's a complete waste of time. Most of us were required to learn how to read and write with/in it for 1-2 hours everyday from 1st-3rd grade and then when we got into later grades, it wasn't mandatory anymore. By the time most people my age got to high school and then college, we realized what a complete waste of time and effort it all was.

For Americans, at least, we know how much our public schools need to pick up their students' competency levels in math, english, and science and if they use those extra hours at such a developmental part of an adolescent's learning stage instead of something as pointless as dumbed-down calligraphy, then they can set the children up for increased comprehension in years to come and a much better chance to advance their learning overall.
