    inconsequential

Pidgin (formerly "GAIM") is a good choice because of its broad protocol compatibility (AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo!, & Zephyr), and the fact that it's multiplatform (runs on Windows, Linux, BSD, etc.).
