How does the copy of Vista that came with my new pc differ from the one sold on store shelf for $200? Is it possible to upgrade an older pc from xp to vista using the recovery DVD that comes with the new pc assuming both pc's are of the same brand?

You could, but it would be a violation of your end user license agreement to install Vista on a second computer... Not that it would work anyway (without some serious, illegal tampering on your part).

Microsoft products "phone home" on a regular basis to check in with Mr. Gates, just to make sure you're using individually licensed, legal copies of your Microsoft software.

They call it the Microsoft "Genuine Advantage" system.

And it makes me glad I switched to Linux years ago.:)

    • I asked this question purely out of curiosity. I think Vista sucks anyway. Most of my pc games that run fine on xp would not run on vista. None of my printers and scanners are compatible with vista. My new pc is practically useless.

I too am switching to Linus. I just ordered 6 sets of Linus install CDs on the web, for a mere $22.

    • Sounds good. I do keep a Windows computer around for games and a few utilities, but my Linux computer is my workstation. For virus-free Internet and productivity, it's just a pleasure to use.
