    Probably the most popular psychoactive drug in the world, used daily by more than 90% of adults in North America. It is commonly found in chocolate, coffee, tea, sodas and energy drinks.

    Caffeine is present in the leaves and beans of the coffee plant, along with the beans, leaves, and fruit of over 60 other plants. In nature it acts as a pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants.

    Overdose - Caffeinism:

    Withdrawal Symptoms —
    Can possibly include(but not limited to) severe headaches, extreme irritability, an inability to concentrate, irregular heart beats, nausea and terrible stomach aches.

    Doses of over 750 mg (7 cups of coffee) can cause -
    Previous symptoms along with reactions similar to an anxiety attack, delirium, drowsiness, ringing ears, diarrhea, vomiting, light flashes, difficulty breathing, and convulsions(extreme overdose).

    ¤ ¤ There are currently four caffeine-induced psychiatric disorders recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders:

    • Caffeine intoxication
    • Caffeine-induced anxiety disorder
    • Caffeine-induced sleep disorder
    • Caffeine-related disorder(not otherwise specified [NOS])

    Effects on memory and learning:

    "A study showed that caffeine could impair short term memory and increase the likelihood of the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon."

    Unlike most other psychoactive substances, caffeine is legal and unregulated in most parts of the world.
