What is the difference between religion and spirituality?

    Spirituality implies that you believe in the existence of God or of multiple gods, and that you do something to pay honor and respect to the diety you worship. Religion is the organization that helps strengthen you in those beliefs and gives you guidelines for living a righteous lifestyle, or a set of requirements in order to be in that religious group.

    A lot of people who talk with Christians say, "I'm not religious," and a very devoted Christian may answer with, "Neither am I," which may catch the non-believer off guard a bit and potentially confuse them. When they ask what the Christian means, a response (at least the one I give) is typically, "I'm not religious because that's not what it's about. Christianity is not meant to be about religion, but rather about having a relationship with the creator of the universe."

    Anyway, if you would like a technical definition:

    Religion: "The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods. Details of belief as taught or discussed."

    Spirituality: "Spirituality can refer to an ultimate or immaterial reality; an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of their being; or the “deepest values and meanings by which people live."

    The two are similar and very closely related. Like prisoner said, "You can have spirituality without religion, but you can't have religion without spirituality."
