Alcohol may be a disease but it is much more controllable than all other diseases. If someone with leukemia could make their blood clean by putting down the bottle, they would in a split second.

    • UH, I don't agree with this answer that was given. Here's the deal. Alcohol is present everywhere. Its ads are posted everywhere. Kids are expected to drink in college and out out of college to be considered "well-rounded" and social. Yes, alcoholism is a disease... and many do recognize this, many don't. there are many who actually have the desire to stop drinking, but their body reacts lethally to withdrawal. Some die because they have indeed put down the bottle and did not have access to even the slightest bit of alcohol. I'll just reiterate by saying that it is a full-fledged baffling disease and people treat you like garbage because the idea is that it's all of your fault and that you are a stupid junkie and every other stigma that goes long with it is attached to you. People will yell at you and one of the best ways to get recovery before hitting rock bottom or death is to find people who share the same disease, who know what you are going through, who will most of all not JUDGE you. AA can be that place.
