No mystery at all. According to the Bible....
    Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the "breath of life"; and man became a "living soul". Body + Breath = A living soul. Your body without this "the breath of life", dead.
    Genesis 3:19
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Most people are confused about the next verse.....
    Ecclesiastes 12:7
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit (breath of life) shall return unto God who gave it. What is this "spirit"....again, the "breath of life". The idea of a separate soul is false. It's like a light bulb that is turned off. When the light bulb is cut off from the source of electricity it doesn't work. When we are "cut-off" from the life giving source, (God) we are dead.
    Genesis 7:
21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
22 All in whose nostrils was the "breath of life", of all that was in the dry land, died.
This was when the great flood occurred. You know about Noah, who built an ark. Notice that the last verse says that "all in whose nostrils was the "breath of life", they died.
