Most popular Linux distributions are available FREE of charge. Go to their website and download an ISO disk image, and then burn the image to a CD or DVD as applicable (do not just copy the ISO to a blank disk).

    For new users, I'd recommend:

    OpenSUSE ( http://en.opensuse.org/ )
    Ubuntu Linux( http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ )
    Kububtu Linux ( http://www.kubuntu.org/ )
    PCLinuxOS ( http://www.pclinuxos.com/ )

I would recommend backing up your data before trying to install Linux, especially if you want to shrink your Windows partition and dual boot Window and Linux from the same computer hard drive. Ubuntu will shrink your partition to allow this, but you can also use a standalone disk tool like GParted ( http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ )

For more information, I'd suggest Wikipedia, and the forum support group of the Linux distro that interests you.

    • Agreed with but I would personally install to a new hard disk it is easier and safer. Drives are dirt cheap these days so...
