It is not, per se, unreasonable, unfair or anything like that. But have you thought through how you are going to look after the baby? Will you return to work quickly - in which case who will care for the baby while you are at work? Or will you look after your child for a long time, in which case how will you be supported financially?

Babies are hugely consuming of time and money. Which is the main reason it is better for a couple to have a baby, so that there is one with a full time job all the time. Good quality baby and child care is very expensive; if you have found, or think you have found, a cheap option, enquire why it is cheap. If the cost isn't making your eyes water, it is probably not good enough. And do you want to have a baby in order for someone else to care for it, for both better and worse.

If you have thought all this through, and planned for it, then go ahead. But be very sure it will be harder and more expensive than you ever thought.

    • Alec has a point. You may have a good job now, but unless it offers good maternity benefits, you are going to be poor if you stay at home with your newborn for any length of time (especially if your new family will only have one source of income).
