"Guitars" is pretty broad, so I'll discuss the solidbody electric.

The Fender Stratocaster (the traditional styling that most people associate with a guitar) is primarily designed in a way to make it comfortable to play. The double cutaways on either side of the neck allow for access to the upper frets. The curved sides allow it to be leaned over and balance on the thigh. Other areas are shaved on the top rear face (again, to allow it to be leaned over) and on the upper front face by the bridge, to allow the forearm to glide comfortably for strumming.

The fact that it's so ergonomic has caused it to be widely copied and popular to the present day.

    • The "distinctive design" is based around ergonomics... practical considerations of playability, which I've described point by point.
