Question

Help answer this question below.

In a survival situation with no hygiene facilities, is it better to wipe or not wipe after defecating?

Considering you could wipe but risk getting pathogens on your hands from that, or not wipe and risk... developing a digestive tract infection maybe?

I really don't know, but I suspect not wiping would be the better solution, even though I'm no expert. A digestive tract infection seems unlikely to me. I mean, do people wipe their dogs' butts, and if they don't, do the dogs get digestive tract infections? I've never heard of that happening. Also, we're the products of millions of years of evolution, and we managed to survive pretty well without using any toilet paper for quite a while.

Getting it on your fingers and shaking hands with people - that might be a different story. If you didn't wipe, I'm guessing the germs would have to be airborne in order to pose as much of a threat.

When you wipe, you're only wiping the outside, so unless you're bleeding there I don't see how it would really make much of a difference, since there will be some residue left over inside that you can't remove.

It'd just be pretty gross not to wipe though, haha.

    • Hehe, yeah. That's what I was thinking - the technically better option would feel nastier.
