    inconsequential

A study by the US Census Bureau ("The Big Payoff: Educational Attainment and Synthetic Estimates of Work-Life Earnings", July 2002) actually showed that you can make about $20,000/yr ($US) less than a professional degree (which for many professions is a Master's). The potential to become overqualified for many jobs and become specialized into research and teaching may not be worth it, especially given that the coursework and thesis may take from 4 to 8 years to complete. However, if teaching or research is your interest, it might be worth pursuing. Chances are favourable that your degree can be inexpensive (or free of charge) by way of a grant or stipend.
