Since hair color (and skin color and eye color) is determined by the pigment melanin, maybe the area around the temples lessen in melanin production faster than other parts of the scalp as some men age?

"...the pigment cells or melanocytes that are at located on the skin's surface and which are instrumental in colouring each of the hair follicles, cease to produce melanin. This phenomenon happens near the temples first for many individuals. Hence giving rise to grey hair first at the temples."
