Can cell phone conversations be tapped?

    Yes, even the new digital cell phones can be tapped if you have the right equipment, but it takes fairly sophisticated and expensive technology that is highly illegal. (Older analog cell phones are much easier to tap but it's still illegal, and there are fewer and fewer of those phones every day.)

    In other words, while most criminals probably wouldn't have either the means or the reason to tap a cell phone, various agencies of the government can and have. (It's easier for them; they can require the phone company to cooperate.)

    • Cell phones can have a program loaded onto them that allows private detectives and police to easily hear your conversations even when you are engaged in a call. This is public knowledge these days. Gps phones from companies such as Sprint can track your whereabouts every 3 minutes.
