There is a place for second-bests. My wife will only play second violin or viola, to support the firsts. My own job requires that I not be a specialist, but "pretty good" rather than the best in half a dozen different things. (I'm a member of a small team translating the Bible into a foreign language. That means I have to be pretty good in five different languages. The only way to be great in any of them would be to ignore the other four.) Medicine is full of specialists, but most of the time you want somebody who's pretty good in everything. P.S. Your picture and personality seem nice, and that's a lot more important!

You're reading Is there a specific type of person who is constantly second best, or am I just surrounded by a bunch of people who, according to literally everyone I know, are better than me?
