I think the stweardess was wrong. Here is some info on drugging babies on airplanes:

    And another website says:
Question: Is it safe to sedate my baby for travel?

Answer: I am strongly against sedating babies during travel. For one thing, sedating medications such as Benadryl don't always have the calming effect you want — some babies get really revved up. Even testing the drug before your trip isn't foolproof — the same medication can make your baby sleepy one day and hyperactive the next. Occasionally, the reaction can be far more serious. I know of one baby who stopped breathing after being sedated on a plane flight, and the pilot had to make an emergency landing to get him to the hospital. The baby was fine, but his parents were horrified.

I think most parents are tempted to sedate their baby for their own convenience. The truth is, your fears about traveling with a fussy baby are usually worse than the trip itself. Although a crying child can certainly make traveling less pleasant, the inconvenience is a small price to pay for a safe, healthy trip.
